Augustin Hadelich and Joyce Yang
(at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library)

Sunday, January 29, 2012
2:00 p.m.

Born in Italy in 1984, the son of German parents, Augustin Hadelich has established himself as an eloquent and unique voice among the new generation of violinists after winning the gold medal for the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. As testament to his astonishing versatility across all periods of the repertoire, he also received the competition’s special awards for Best Performance of a Romantic Concerto, Classical Concerto, Beethoven Sonata, Violin Sonata other than Beethoven, Bach Work, Commissioned Work, Encore Piece, and Paganini Caprice.

Recently Mr. Hadelich made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. Of a second concert at the Bowl, Richard S. Ginell said in the Los Angeles Times, “a personal triumph … luscious tone and an Old World grace that you don't hear very much from young violinists anymore.”

Critically acclaimed young pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences around the globe with her stunning virtuosity combined with heartfelt lyricism and interpretive sensitivity. Just twenty-four, she has established herself as one of the leading artists of her generation through her innovative solo recitals and notable collaborations with the world’s top orchestras. In 2010 she was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Ms. Yang received her first piano lesson at age four from her aunt. By age ten, she had entered the School of Music at the Korea National University of Arts, and subsequently made a number of concerto and recital appearances in Seoul and Daejon. In 1997, Ms. Yang moved to the United States to begin studies at the Pre-College division of the Juilliard School in New York with Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky. She recently graduated from Juilliard with special honor, as the recipient of the 2010 Arthur Rubinstein Prize.
